June 2026: A searchable version of Wheat Gene Catalogue - 2024

The Catalogue of Gene Symbols for Wheat, a.k.a. the Wheat Gene Catalogue (WGC) is a resource of accepted gene and QTL names, mapping and germplasm information, and laboratory designations for markers. The Catalogue is published in whole periodically with supplements by a committee of experts in wheat research.

 

Now, GrainGenes created a searchable version of Wheat Gene Catalogue - 2024.

June 2026: Released PanViewer

PanViewer is a new GrainGenes tool currently under development that facilitates the exploration of pan-genes across wheat, barley, and oat genomes. PanViewer has been developed to provide researchers with an intuitive, user-friendly platform for visualizing and comparing pan-gene sequence diversity, gene presence–absence variation, and homoeologous relationships across major cereal crops. A total of 16 wheat genomes, 77 barley genomes, and 33 oat genomes have been processed using Pandagma, a method developed for pan-gene annotation that takes into account homoeologous chromosomes.

February 2026: SNPversity 2.0 with diverse wild barley (Hordeum vulgare ssp. spontaneum) accessions added on GrainGenes. The web-based tool facilitates access to variant data and visualizing genetic diversity and is accessible through https://graingenes.org/snpversity/

September 2025: FoldSeek Search Tool added for the predicted AlphaFold2 database structures of Triticum aestivum, Triticum turgidum, and Hordeum vulgare

We added the FoldSeek Search Tool for AlphaFold2 structures of three pre-calculated genomes searched against six genomes.  The predicted AlphaFold2 database structures for Triticum aestivum (139,466 proteins), Triticum turgidum (181,745 proteins), and Hordeum vulgare (195,130 proteins) were each aligned against six proteomes (T. aestivumT. turgidum, Triticum urartu, H. vulgareAegilops tauschii and Arabidopsis thaliana) using the software FoldSeek.

July 2025: New YouTube video tutorials for contributing projects: WGC at Komugi and MASwheat from UC Davis

The GrainGenes project acquires information primarily from published data, but also relies on curation from other small grains projects.  

Two new YouTube videos were created to highlight these resources.

Wheat Gene Catalogue at Komugi describes the online database from the Wheat Gene Catalog through 2013, an important resource for historical wheat genes and cultivars containing favorable alleles.
