The RFLP workshop held during the VI International Barley Genetics Symposium at Helsingborg expressed the need to establish a standard set of RFLP probes, which eventually will be available to all barley research workers. Furthermore it has been agreed, that the MWG group (working at Munich, Weihenstephan, and Grunbach) shall present a proposal for this purpose made up from approximately 140 probes (10 per chromosome arm) which includes samples also from other groups able and willing to contribute probes to the standard set.
The present status of these efforts is summarized in Table 1. The proposal includes probes which have been developed and mapped in three working groups from linkage data obtained with four barley crosses. They are listed in the order of their positions on the different chromosomes as indicated in relevant publications of the three working groups. The intention is to develop a standard set of single copy probes from different materials which interlock in their genetic distance. For the time being genetic distances between the probes listed in Table 1 are only known as far as they have been tested with the same set of segregating material.
