Dwarf Bunt Screening
Blair J. Goates
USDA-ARS, Aberdeen, ID
Dwarf bunt infection at the dryland Green Canyon site near Logan, Utah was extremely
low and variable this season. Each entry was seeded into two replicated five-foot rows on
October 6, 1999 in extremely dry soil. When the nursery was inoculated with a
suspension of teliospores on November 2, the seed had not germinated and was still
sitting in very dry soil with the exception of very few rows that happended to hit some
moisture. In general, stands in the spring were excellent and the final crop looked very
good due to good moisture in the spring. For what it is worth, the percent bunted spikes
in each WR entry is listed below. The susceptible check cultivar Cheyenne is included in
the data in the order it was planted in the nursery.
