SPRING WHEAT PRODUCTION

Other Spring Wheat. The nation's output of other spring wheat is estimated at 553 million
bushels (14.9 million metric tons) compared with 509 million bushels (13.8 million metric
tons) in 1981. Harvested acres totaled 16.3 million acres (6.60 million hectares)
compared to 16.6 million acres (6.72 million hectares) harvested a year ago. The average
yield per acre in 1982 at 34.0 bushels compares with 30.8 bushels per acre realized in
 11981.

The spring was about average which allowed normal seeding dates throughout the upper
midwest. Very wet weather occurred through the period of May 9-18 which severely hampered
seeding efforts and resulted in some late seeded fields, especially in northwestern
Minnesota and northeastern North Dakota. Generally good growing conditions were present
across the region allowing record yields in North Dakota and Montana, with a record tying
yield in Minnesota. Harvest was slightly hampered in IOC21ized areas by cool, wet weather
but little sprout damage was evident with a good quality crop harvested.

Seeding conditions were near normal followed by generally adequate moisture resulted in
record yields. Harvest was slightly delayed by periods of wet, cool weather but little
 sprout damage was reported.
