RESULTS OF SPRING WHEAT VARIETIES GROWN IN COOPERATIVE PLOT AND NURSERY EXPERIMENTS IN THE SPRING WHEAT REGION IN 1981 The year 1981 was the 53rd in the history of the uniform regional testing program. Data summarized in this report were obtained from (1) the uniform regional hard red spring nursery, and (2) the uniform regional durum nursery. The International Sawfly Yield Nursery was not grown in 1981. NEW VARIETIES Hard Red Spring Wheat Alex (CI 17910) - Awnless, midseason, medium height, moderately susceptible to lodging. Resistant to stem and leaf rust. Moderately susceptible to ergot, loose smut, and tan spot. High yield and test weight, medium protein percent. Satisfactory milling and baking. Released by North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in 1981. Columbus - Awnless, late, medium height. Moderately resistant to stem and leaf rust. Medium to low yield and high test weight. Resistant to sprouting. High percent protein with satisfactory milling and baking. Released by Agriculture Canada, Manitoba in 1980. Production of certified seed limited to Canada. Oslo - Awned, early to midseason, semidwarf with good lodging resistance. Moderately resistant to stem and leaf rust. High yield and medium test weight. Satisfactory milling but low bake absorption. Released by North American Plant Breeders in 1981. Seed sale regulated by U.S. Variety Protection Act. PR 2360 - Awned, midseason, semidwarf with good lodging resistance.
