RESULTS OF SPRING WHEAT VARIETIES GROWN IN COOPERATIVE PLOT AND NURSERY EXPERIMENTS IN THE SPRING WHEAT REGION IN 1979 The year 1979 was the 51st in the history of the uniform regional testing program. Data summarized in this report were obtained from (1) the uniform regional hard red spring nursery, (2) the uniform regional durum nursery, and (3) the international sawfly yield nursery. NEW VARIETIES Hard Red Spring Wheat Aim - Awned, midseason to early semidwarf with good lodging resistance. Medium yield and test weight. Susceptible to stem rust and moderately susceptible to leaf rust. Milling and baking characteristics are inadequately tested. Unreleased pedigree. Released by Western Plant Breeders, Incorporated in 1978. Seed sale regulated by the U.S. Variety Protection Act. B-1 - Awned, late maturing semidwarf with medium lodging resistance. Medium to low yield with very low test weight. Susceptible to stem and leaf rust. Possible vernalization requirement but a spring type. Classified by the Federal Grain Inspection Service as a soft red winter wheat. Unsatisfactory hard wheat milling and baking characteristics. Selected as an individual plant from the variety 'Lark' by Mr. Allen in northwest Minnesota. Marberg (MT 7416) - C.I. 17829. Awned, early semidwarf with good lodging resistance. Medium yield and test weight. Resistant to stem rust and moderate susceptible to leaf rust. Milling and baking characteristics are satisfactory, but lower than Chris. Selected from crosses involving Red River 68, C.I. 13253, and Centana. Released by Montana Agricultural Experiment Station and USDA, SEA-AR in 1980. Pondera (MT 749) - C.I. 17828. Awned, early to midseason semidwarf. Medium yield and high test weight. Resistant to stem rust but moderately susceptible to leaf rust. Milling and baking characteristics are satisfactory but lower than Chris. Selected from crosses involving Red River 68, Sheridan, C.I. 13253, and Centana. Released by the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station and USDA, SEA-AR, in 1980.
