TRIAL DESCRIPTION AND SUMMARY
 
 The 1978 Uniform Regional Hard Red Spring Wheat Performance Nursery (URHRSP) was planted at 23 
 locations and harvested at 22 in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, 
 Wyoming, Wisconsin, Washington, Nebraska, and Canada (Table 1-A). The nursery contained 26 
 wheat entries, 4 checks (3 tall and 1 semidwarf) and 22 experimentals (7 tall and 15 
 semidwarf). Yield data obtained from Madison and from Mead were not used in the overall 
 average. A hail storm destroyed the trial at Bozeman in 1978. Data from 22 stations are given 
 in Tables 1-1 to 1-22.
 
 The average yields at the two irrigated stations, Carrington, North Dakota; and Aberdeen, Idaho 
 were 55.8 and 49.4 Bu/A, respectively. For the entries grown at the non-irrigated stations, the 
 highest average yield was 57.4 Bu/A at Crookston, Minnesota, while the lowest average was 17.8 
 Bu/A at Madison, Wisconsin.
 
 Miscellaneous agronomic and disease data are summarized in Table 2. The entry SD 2273 headed in 
 58 days, while WSMP 122 headed in 65 days. The maturity range was between 90 to 99 days.
 
 The average yield and bushel weight data of all individual entries for 1978. 1977-78. and 
 1976-78 are shown in Table 3.
 
 Six wheats exceeded Era in yield in 1978. In 1977-78. MN 70170 and MN 7125 exceeded Era and NK 
 75S5511 was equal to Era. ND 550 was the highest yielding normal height line followed by SD 
 2355 and SD 2273 in 1977-78. Two year data indicate that ND 550, MN 70202, MT 749, and NK 
 75S5511 are high test weight lines.
 
 Seedling reaction to stem rust are given in Table 4-1. Adult field reactions to stem and leaf 
 rust are shown in Tables 4-2 and 4-3, respectively.
