RESULTS OF SPRING WHEAT VARIETIES GROWN IN COOPERATIVE PLOT AND
NURSERY EXPERIMENTS IN THE SPRING WHEAT REGION IN 1973

The year 1973 was the 45th in the history of the uniform regional testing program. Data
summarized in this report were obtained from (1) the uniform regional hard red spring wheat
nursery, (2) the uniform regional durum nursery and (3) the international sawfly yield
 nursery.

The decision was made to omit the section on "Results from State-Planned Yield Trials"
from Regional Report. If you are interested in having this information, you may contact the
 individual state cooperator directly.

 NEW VARIETIES

Six hard red spring wheat varieties were named and released.

OLAF (ND497), C.I. 15930 - Awned, semidwarf, medium maturity with high lodging
resistance. Resistant to stem and leaf rust. High yield and medium test weight. Protein
content and bake absorption are lower than Chris, but better than Era. Tendency to have long
dough mixing requirements. Selected from crosses involving Conley, Justin and Waldron.
Released by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in 1973.

WS 6 - Awned, early semidwarf with high lodging resistance. Resistant to stem and leaf
rust. Medium yield and test weight. Quality data may be obtained from North Dakota State
University. Parentage not disclosed. Released by World Seeds Inc. in 1973.

NOWESTA - A selection out of Waldron originating in Drayton, North Dakota. Nowesta,
unlike Waldron, is awned. Otherwise, in comparison to Waldron, maturity is similar, protein
and test weight are slightly higher in limited tests, and limited yield data show yield
about the same. Nowesta has more uniformity of heads than Waldron.

NORANA (MT7042), C.I. 15927 - Awned, semidwarf, medium to late maturity with high
lodging resistance. Resistant to stem rust and tolerant of Septoria, but it is susceptible
to leaf rust. High yield and medium bushel weight. Flour yield is lower than Fortuna, but
equal to Centana. Baking characteristics are satisfactory. Selected from crosses involving
Sheridan/3/Norin 1O/Brevor 14// 5* Centana. Released by the Montana Agricultural Experiment
Station and the Agricultural Research Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture in 1973.

TIOGA (S-6662), C.I. 17286 - A sawfly resistant variety. Medium height and maturity
with high lodging resistance. High yield and test weight. Released by the North Dakota
Agricultural Experiment Station, and ARS, USDA in 1974.

ELLAR (ND491), C.I. 17289 - Awnless, early medium height and lodging resistance.
Resistant to stem and leaf rust. Medium yield and test weight. Flour yield and wheat protein
are lower than Chris, but better than Era. Baking and mixing characteristics are
satisfactory. Selected from crosses involving Waldron, Kenya Farmer, Lee, Mida and Cadet.
Released by the North Dakota Agriculture Experiment Station in 1974.
