 TRIAL DESCRIPTION AND SUMMARY

The Uniform Regional Hard Red Spring Wheat Nursery was planted at 24 locations and harvested
at 23 in Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Idaho, Nebraska, Wyoming, Wisconsin, South
Dakota, Washington and Canada. Hail destroyed the test at Langdon. Data from 23 stations are
given in Tables 1-1 to 1-23.

The average yield at the three irrigated stations, Aberdeen, Idaho, Carrington, North
Dakota, Bozeman, Montana was 85.3, 65.3 and 64.1 Bu/A, respectively. For the entries grown
at the non-irrigated stations, the highest average yield was 63.8 Bu/A at Minot, North
Dakota, while the lowest average was 7.8 Bu/A at Lind, Washington.

Average yields and bushel weights in 1973 and for the three-year period 197173 for entries
in this nursery are shown in Table 2. The entries Era, ND522 and ND508 yielded 48.6, 48.1
and 47.5 Bu/A, respectively. North Dakota selection ND519 had the best bushel weight with
 60.9 Lbs/Bu followed by 11-64-27 with 60.5 Lbs/Bu.

Miscellaneous agronomic and disease data are summarized in Table 3. The entries ND519, ND520
and H678-1-6-9 headed at 62 days, while Marquis, Era and 11-64-33 headed in 68 days. Waldron
and ND510 were the first to mature with a similar value of 94 days, while 11-64-27 and
ND521** were the last with 99 days. The entries Justin, ND507 and H681-4-5 tended to shatter
more than other lines. North Dakota selections ND522 and ND525 had the best 1000 kernel
weight with 39.4 and 39.2 gms, respectively.

Adult field reactions to leaf and stem rust are given in Table 4. Stem rust was relatively
scarce in the spring wheat region in 1973. All entries except Marquis possess adequate
resistance. Leaf rust isolates continued to show aggressiveness on spring wheat varieties.
