Thirteen of the twenty-eight entries grown in this nursery were semidwarfs. Data from 19 stations are given in Tables 1-1 to 1-19. The average yield at the three irrigated stations, Aberdeen, Idaho, Bozeman, Montana, and Carrington, North Dakota, was 76.5, 59.4 and 50.6 Bu/A, respectively. For the entries grown at the non-irrigated stations, the highest average yield was 61.3 Bu/A at Sidney, Montana, while the lowest average was 17.9 Bu/A at Madison, Wisconsin. Average yields and bushel weights in 1972 and for the three-year period 1970-72 for entries in this nursery are given in Table 2. Twelve of the thirteen semidwarf selections ranked above the check variety Chris. Era ranked first for the fourth year in a row. Minnesota selection 11-64-27 had the best bushel weight with 61.2 Lbs/Bu followed by Era and Protor with a similar value of 60.5 Lbs/Bu. Miscellaneous agronomic and disease data are summarized in Table 3. The entry FBA 004 headed 5 days earlier than Chris, while Era and H 689-5-5 were one day later than Chris. The entries Selkirk, ND515 and FBW406 were the first to mature, having a similar value of 99 days, while Chris was the last with 105 days. The semidwarfs were about 15-20 cms shorter than the standard varieties. All entries except Marquis, Chris, ND511, RL4238, and H 689-5-5 resisted lodging. ND509 and ND499 appear to be more susceptible to the Hessian fly. For the second year in a row, ND497 had the best 1000 kernel weight with 41.8 gms, followed by ND499 and FBW434 with 41.7 and 41.3 gms, respectively. Adult field reactions to leaf and stem rust are given in Table 4. Stem rust was relatively scarce in the spring wheat region last year. All entries except Marquis possess adequate resistance. Leaf rust isolates continued to show aggressiveness on spring wheat varieties. Incorporating new leaf rust resistant genes into spring wheats should be a high priority item.
