SPRING WHEAT PRODUCTION

 SPRING WHEAT OTHER THAN DURUM.

Growers produced an estimated 550,902 million bushels (15.8 million metric tons), up 8
percent from the 1999 production and up 4 percent from 1998. Yield averaged 38 bushels
per acre, up 4 bushels per acre from 1999 and 3 bushels per acre from 1998. Area
harvested totaled 15,058 million acres (7.6 million hectares), 1 percent higher than the
14.9 million acres (7.9 million hectares) in 1999.

Seeding of the spring wheat was generally normal to timely throughout the region. The
early seeded wheat encountered reasonably good growing conditions until wet weather in
late June and July, but mid-July, August and September were drier and warmer than normal
in Minnesota and North Dakota. Fusarium head blight attacked wheat during anthesis in
areas of northern North Dakota. However, scab did not cause major damage to yields in
the region but was devastating in the areas of North Dakota affected. Leaf diseases were
present in some areas but losses were relatively low. South Dakota had record yield
with nearly record yield in North Dakota. Minnesota was 8 bushels lower than record
yield (55 bu/A) set in 1985 and 1992 but yields returned to high levels in all three
states. Generally a good quality crop was harvested.
