TRIAL DESCRIPTION AND SUMMARY

The 1999 Uniform Regional Hard Red Spring Wheat Performance Nursery was planted at 19
locations and was harvested at all locations in Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana (one
location not reporting), Wyoming, Washington, and Canada but one location was not
harvested in North Dakota because of severe hail damage (Table 1). The nursery contained
26 entries and 5 checks. Trials were conducted as randomized complete blocks with three
replicates. Yield data obtained from Manitoba, Canada were not used in any of the over
location averages nor in the stability parameter analysis because of water damage to the
plots. Data from each of 17 locations are given in Tables 2-1 to 2-17.

The highest average yielding location was Powell, WY, with 80 bu/A and the lowest
yielding location was 18 bu/A at Prosper, North Dakota. The average yield of 16 locations
combined was 48 bu/A, with N96-0144, SD3348, N96-0060 and SD8119 in the first LSD unit.
SD3414 was earliest to head at 23 days after June 1, while FA997-703 was latest to head
at 31 days. The entries within the first LSD unit for test weight were ND726, SD3345, and
ND721. Data for experimentals and checks grown for one year are in Table 3-1 and for two
years are given in Table 3-2.

Stability parameters for entries in 1999 are given in Table 3-3. A lower b value
indicates less responsiveness to changing environments for yield. A high Msq indicates
lower predictability for yield and should be a warning that individual locations caused
major deviation from expected performance caused by either disease or agronomic problems.

Adult plant field reactions to stem and leaf rust are shown in Tables 4-1 through 4-2.
Scab reactions from field inoculation in South Dakota and Minnesota are given in Table
 4-3, 4-4, and 4-5.
