****************************************************************** SPRING WHEAT PRODUCTION ****************************************************************** Growers produced an estimated 530.7 million bushels (14.6 million metric tons), down 5 percent from the 1994 production and down 6 percent from 1993. Yield averaged 32 bushels per acre, the same in 1994 and 2 bushels down from 1993. Area harvested totaled 16.5 million acres (6.3 million hectares), 7 percent less than the 17.6 million acres in 1994 and 2 percent less than in 1993. Scab again caused severe losses to producers in the east central to the northeastern part of North Dakota and in northwestern Minnesota. This is the third year the disease has had significant impact on yield and quality of wheat grown in those areas. Most of the rest of the states were relatively free of scab. The dryer weather following anthesis and the very late seeding in some areas because of wet seed beds, possibly helped reduce scab in 1995. Leaf diseases were again present, following the wet June weather.
