TRIAL DESCRIPTION AND SUMMARY The 1989 Uniform Regional Hard Red Spring Wheat Performance Nursery was planted at 23 locations and harvested at all 23 locations in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Wisconsin, Washington, Nebraska, and Canada (Table 1). The nursery contained 31 entries, 5 checks (4 tall, 1 semidwarf), and 26 experimentals (8 talls and 18 semidwarfs). Yield data obtained from Tetonia, Havre, Dickinson, Powell, and Mead were not used in the overall average nor the stability parameter analysis. Data from 23 stations are given in Tables 2-1 to 2-24. For entries from these stations, the highest average yield was 95 bu/A at Aberdeen, Idaho and the lowest yield was 17 bu/A at Williston, North Dakota. The average yield was 41.7 bu/A and seven wheats were in the first LSD unit (3.1) from the top yielding entry. Entry SD3005 was earliest to head and averaged 21 days after June 1 closely followed by SD 3032 at 22 days, while Era and Marquis were latest at 28 days. The average yield and test weight data for 1989, 1988-89, and 1987-89 are shown in Table 3-1. Two wheats exceeded Stoa, the highest yielding check in 1989 and only one in 1988-89. 2375 and N86-903 were the highest yielding in 1989, while Stoa and 2375 were highest in 1988-89. None of the entries exceeded 60 lb/bu in 1989, but the highest two lines were ND650 and 2375 in both 1989 and 1988-89. Stability parameters for entries in 1989 and percent of times the line appeared in the top five entries at each location are given in Table 3-2. Entries with the greatest deviations from regression were MN86329, which was sterile in Fargo, SD3005 and WA7493. Greenhouse seedling and adult plant field reactions to stem and leaf rust are shown in Tables 4-1 to 4-3.
