TRIAL DESCRIPTION AND SUMMARY

The 1987 Uniform Regional Hard Red Spring Wheat Performance Nursery (URHRSWPN) was
planted at 23 locations and harvested all 21 locations in Minnesota, North Dakota, South
Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Wisconsin, Washington, Nebraska, and Canada (Table 1).
The nursery contained 34 entries, 5 checks (4 tall, 1 semidwarf), and 29 experimentals (8
talls and 21 semidwarfs). Yield data obtained from Mead Dickinson, Sheridan, Powell,
Dickinson, and Pullman were not used in the overall average. Data from 23 stations are
given in Tables 2-1 to 2-24.

For entries grown at the stations, the highest average yield was 86 bu/A at Aberdeen,
Idaho while the lowest average yield was 20.4 bu/A at Dickinson, North Dakota.

Entry SD3005 was earliest to head and averaged 11 days after June 1 closely followed by
SD2999 at 12 days while Marquis and Era were latest at 19 days (Table 2-24). The average
yield and bushel weight data for 1987, 1986-87, and 1985-87 are shown in Table 3-1. Two
wheats exceeded Stoa, the highest yielding check, and 17 exceeded Butte 86, the earliest
heading check. RH Hybrid #2, MN82047, RH Line, and W2501 were highest yielding entries in
1987. MN82047, ND606, and MN82354 were the highest yielding entry in 1986-87, while
MN82047 was the highest yielding entry in 1985-87. Four entries exceeded 60 lb/bu in
 1987, FA984-384, SD2980, ND626, and ND640. The highest test weight lines in 1986-87 were
 SD2980, ND626, and ND622 and in 1985-87 was MN82047.

Stability parameters for entries in 1987 and percent of times the line appeared in the
top five entries at each location are given in Table 3-2. Entries with the greatest
deviations from regression were MT8336, HS84-700, and HS84-692. Stoa appeared in the top
5, 46% of the line while SD 8052-1 appeared 36% of the time. Greenhouse seedling and
adult plant field reactions to stem and leaf rust are shown in Tables 4-1 to 4-3. Adult
leaf spot reaction are given in Table 4-4.
