TRIAL DESCRIPTION AND SUMMARY

The 1986 Uniform Regional Hard Red Spring Wheat Performance Nursery (URHRSWPN) was
planted at 22 locations and harvested at 21 locations in Minnesota, North Dakota, South
Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Wisconsin, Washington, Nebraska, and Canada (Table 1).
The nursery contained 31 entries, 5 checks (4 tall, 1 semidwarf), and 26 experimentals (6
talls and 20 semidwarfs). Yield data obtained from Mead and Selby were not used in the
overall average. Data from 21 stations are given in Tables 2-1 to 2-22.

For entries grown at the stations, the highest average yield was 73 bu/A at Aberdeen,
Idaho while the lowest average yield was 26 bu/A at Madison, Wisconsin.

Entries SD2980 and SD2990 headed 22 days after June I while Marquis headed 30 days after
June 1. The average yield and bushel weight data f or 1986, 1985-86, and 1984-86 are
shown in Table 3-1. Seventeen wheats exceeded Era, the highest yielding check, and 19
exceeded Butte, the earliest heading check. HS82-175, SD2956, ND606, and MN82047 were the
highest yielding entries in 1985-86 while SD2956 was the highest yielding entry in
1984-86. One entry exceeded 60 lb/bu in 1986, SD2980. The highest test weight lines in
 1985-86 were HS82-175, SD2962, Butte, SD2956 and MN82047 and in 1984-86 was Butte.

Stability parameters for entries in 1986 and percent of times the line appeared in the
top five entries at each location are given in Table 3-2. Entries with the greatest
deviations from regression were Marquis, MT8304, and C982-324. HS82-175 and SD2961
appeared in the top 5 60% of the time. SD2956 and ND606 appeared in the top 5 about 40%
of the time. Greenhouse seedling and adult field reactions to stem and leaf rust are
shown in Tables 4-1 to 4-3. Adult leaf spot reactions are given in Table 4-4.
