RESULTS OF SPRING WHEAT VARIETIES GROWN IN COOPERATIVE PLOT AND NURSERY EXPERIMENTS IN THE 
 SPRING WHEAT REGION IN 1978
 
 The year 1978 was the 50th in the history of the uniform regional testing program. Data 
 summarized in this report were obtained from (1) the uniform regional hard red spring nursery, 
 (2) the uniform regional durum nursery, and (3) the international sawfly yield nursery.
 
 NEW VARIETIES
 
 Hard Red Spring Wheat
 
 Len (ND 543) - Awned, midseason semidwarf, with good lodging resistance. Resistant to stem 
 rust and leaf rust. Medium yield and high test weight. More resistant to leaf spotting 
 diseases and shattering than Olaf. Milling and baking characteristics are satisfactory. 
 Selected from crosses involving ND 499, Justin, RL 4205, and Wisconsin 261. Released by North 
 Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and USDA, SEA-AR in 1979.
 
 James (SD 2273) - Awned, early to midseason. Medium height and lodging resistance. Medium 
 yield and test weight. Resistant to stem and leaf rust. Milling and baking characteristics are 
 better than Era but lower than Chris. Selected from a cross of Olaf and ND 510-2. Released by 
 South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in 1979.
 
 Wampum (C.I. 17691). - Awned. midseason, and medium height. High yield under irrigation. 
 Resistant to stripe and leaf rust, susceptible to stem rust. Selected from crosses involving 
 Henry, Omar, Hope, Reliance, Prelude, Clarendon, CI 13730, and Lee. Released by Washington and 
 Idaho Agricultural Experiment Stations and USDA, SEA-AR in 1979.
