Bushels of spring wheat, other than durum, were increased by 80 percent over a
year ago. This was caused by 1) favorable growing conditions and 2) an increase
of 43 percent in the acreage planted. Of the four major spring wheat producing
states, Minnesota showed a very dramatic 146 percent increase in the number of
 bushels produced.

Bushels of durum wheat produced were increased by 72 percent over a year ago,
but still the total production was below that of the 1969 crop year. The record
1969 production of durum wheat was mainly attributed to the acreage planted.
