IV. 14. Coordinator's report: Pest resistant genes.
J.G. Moseman, Plant Genetics and Germplasm Institute, USDA, SEA-ARNortheastern Region, Beltsville, Maryland 20705, U.S.A.
Many barley selections and varieties have been reported to be resistant to the pathogens inciting the diseases powdery mildew, leaf rust, scald, net blotch, and to the cereal leaf beetle. The inheritance of the resistance of some of those hosts to the pathogens has been determined. The reactions of some of the new resistant hosts suggest that they have new and different genes conditioning their resistant reactions. Special studies are required to determine the relationships of the genes conditioning the resistant reactions of the new resistant hosts to previously identified resistant genes. The new genes for pest resistance will be designated as soon as the special tests have been completed.
The coordinator would appreciate being informed of data obtained by other individuals regarding resistance in barley to various pests. The following type of information is desired:
1. List of new sources of resistance to specific pests--include culture or other designations and other information regarding the pest and the CI or local number or name used to designate the hosts.
2. Inheritance of resistance of hosts to pests--number, dominance, and relationships of resistance genes.
3. Relationships of resistance genes to other genes and their location on chromosomes.
You will be informed before your information is referred to in subsequent reports and your contributions will be acknowledged.
