FOREWORD

Volume 8 of the Barley Genetics Newsletter continues to have a large number of research notes. This seems to be the principal usefulness of this publication. The editors are gratified that research workers using barley take the time to submit a report on their findings. This will stimulate continued work on scientific problems.

This issue contains gene descriptions which should nearly complete the major located genes in barley. Remember, anyone is qualified to prepare or to revise a gene description. Also remember that BGN is an official publication with reference to symbols, stock lists and linkage maps as authorized by the First International Barley Genetics Symposium.

The editors solicit letters regarding the Newsletter. Let us hear from you.

As a result of the study of linkage between marker genes and translocations by Kramer, Veyl and Hanson (1954) linkage groups III (n) and VII (br) were found to be associated with the same chromosome (chromosome 1).

Later, Tsuchiya (1956) confirmed by trisomic analysis of n, br, and fc the association of these two linkage groups. Haus (1958) found by conventional linkage studies the association of genes ac2 (Group III) and yc (Group VII).

In Barley Genetics I (1964) the first complete map of chromosome 1 was published.
