BARLEY GENETICS NEWSLETTER, VOL. 5, VI. DESCRIPTION OF GENETIC STOCKS
Editors, pp. 95-170

The editors have received a large number of descriptions of genetic stocks for the present issue. We have decided to limit this issue of BGN to approximately 200 pages because of additional publication and mailing costs. We are therefore holding some of the descriptions of genetic stocks for the next issue (Vol. 6). We appreciate the response we have had in the preparation of these descriptions and encourage workers to continue submitting these as well as to review the descriptions already published and revise them when appropriate.

The editors would suggest that a description of a genetic stock is a description of a homozygous state of the gene and is assigned a Barley Genetic Stock Number which can refer only to any one homozygous state of the gene except for non-viable mutants. In many cases each of the mutant forms of a gene should be described as a genetic stock and a stock number should be assigned to each form. An example is the gene locus on chromosome 4 for hoods or awns. One genetic stock is hooded, KK; a second stock is awned, kk; a third stock has elevated hoods, KeKe; and each stock is assigned a separate genetic stock number.

Descriptions were prepared by the following workers. The writers appreciate receiving comments, suggestions, or a revised version for part or all of a description of any stocks.

Six row vs. two row Aa(3)
Two row vs. six row Zz(5)
Six row vs. two row (distichon) vs. two row (deficiens) A, as, af (4)
Six row vs. two row  Vv(2) at

Inheritance:  Monofactorial incomplete dominance (1)
Located on chromosome 2 (5)

Description:  In varieties having the recessive genotype for hoods (kk), central florets of the spike have long awns, while the lateral florets are awnless with rounded tips and are sterile. Heterozygotes have central florets long awned with lateral florets awnless but fertile. The percentage of fertility of the lateral florets in the heterozygotes is not as high as in the six-rowed, but neither are they as infertile as are the two-rowed (3). Character expression is related to the genotype with regard to the multiple allelic series, I, Ih, i on chromosome 4.
