II.2 The intergeneric hybrid Hordeum - Elymus.

F. Kh. Bakhteyev and E. M. Darevskaya, Department of Distant Hybridization, Main Botanical Garden of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Moscow, I-276, USSR.

The crosses of Hordeum spontaneum C. Koch em. Bacht. (2n=14) x Elymus arenarius L. (2n=56) resulted in producing a single grain only. The latter being seeded into the soil emerged normally and developed without evident anomalies. Later on, however, the development of the hybrid plant began to be stunted very visibly and the leaves which up to that time had been developing well started to wither. The drying up of the leaf proceeded from its tip and then this disastrous process covered all the blade from the tip to the leaf base. To the time of complete drying up of the leaf a new leaf managed to appear, it being outwardly quite healthy and normal. But as soon as it had reached complete development - withering began anew. To our regret all the agricultural means which had been undertaken failed to save the intergeneric hybrid.
