II.30 Induced erectoid mutants in barley at low seed moisture content.

Jagdamba Singh and Rishi Muni Singh. Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Faculty of Agriculture, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi-221005 (India).

The barley variety 'Amber' which is tall, awned, six rowed, husked and has lax spike was used as experimental material. The tallness and lax spike traits of Amber served as useful criteria for screening of induced erectoid mutants. Two erectoid mutants B 13-erect-1 and B 13-erect-2 were identified in treatment 15 Kr at 7.5 percent seed moisture content, whose description is given in table below.

Table 1. Data on quantitative characters of induced erectoid mutants and mother variety

These two erectoid mutants are dwarf/semidwarf with dense spike, broad long leaves, yellow tips till maturity and of good lodging resistance. These two erectoid mutants with shorter and stiffer straw may be profitably used in hybridization programme for imparting lodging resistance in lodging susceptible varieties.
