FOREWORD
Volume 5 of Barley Genetics Newsletter initiates the policy of charging five U.S. dollars per copy to help meet publication and distribution costs. Neither the quality nor the quantity of contributions have diminished as a consequence of charging for copies. Several items concerning charges have been brought to our attention. First, workers in West Germany, Sweden, and Denmark are not charged for copies because these countries contribute financial support for publication and distribution of the Newsletter. Barley workers in some countries have difficulty with International currency exchange and can not pay in U.S. dollars. As the purpose of BGN is to provide an exchange of information as well as to serve as an official publication for gene symbols and descriptions, stock designations and linkage maps, all barley workers should receive a copy. Those workers experiencing difficulty in paying in U.S. dollars will be sent copies free upon request. In such cases, we will welcome an exchange of local publications for BGN. All publications received in exchange for BGN will be kept at the Barley Genetic Stock Center at Fort Collins, Colorado, USA, and a copy of part of the publication will be made available to barley workers upon request.

Again, the editors solicit your suggestions and comments for improving the Newsletter. We will also remind you that a minimum of editing of manuscripts is done. Please follow the "Rules for Contribution" published in this volume.

The editors thank you for making this another successful volume of Barley Genetics Newsletter and we are looking forward to your contributions for Volume 6.

Editors.

FRONT PAGE DIAGRAM - BARLEY KARYOTYPE
In 1950, Hagberg and Tjio showed the normal karyotype of barley studied by a new technique - aceto-orcein staining of root tip cells after pretreatment with oxyquinoline solution (Hagberg, A. and J. H. Tjio, 1950. Cytological localization of the translocation point for the barley mutant erectoides. Hereditas 36: 487-491).
