II.41. Additional cases of maternal inheritance of chlorophyll mutations in barley.
T. Tsuchiya, Department of Agronomy, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado 80521, USA.
The first maternal inheritance of chlorina character in barley was reported by Robertson (1937). In recent years seven more cases of maternal inheritance of chlorina mutants have been reported (Tsuchiya, 1972; McMullen, 1972). Several white streak mutants in barley showed partial maternal inheritance (Takahashi and Moriya, 1969; Tsuchiya, 1972).
1. Streaked mutations.
In his previous note on allelism testing of white streak mutants, the present author (Tsuchiya, 1972, 1973) reported that wst3 and genes for five other white streak mutants were allelic to wst in chromosome 3. In that experiment the following two strains were used only as a female parent in crosses.
Albino stripe T12-26
Streak T2-28, C.I. 6758
These two stocks and another yellow streaked mutant (CSU B15-11) were used as the female parent in crosses with normal green of Shin Ebisu 16 (S.E. 16). The results are shown in Table 1.
Table 1. Phenotypes of F1 hybrids from crosses between three streaked mutants and normal green.
It is obvious from the results given in Table 1 that the streaked characters of all three mutants are controlled by cytoplasmic genes and show maternal inheritance.
2. Chlorina mutants.
Two chlorina mutants in the world collection at the Barley Genetic Stock Center in Fort Collins were subject to the allelism testing. The materials used in the crossing are as follows:
The phenotypes of the F1 hybrids are shown in Table 2.
Table 2. Phenotypes of F1 hybrids from crosses between two chlorina mutants
From the results given in Table 2 the following conclusions are drawn: 1. The chlorina character of T1-27 is maternally inherited. 2. Trebi chlorina (B13-11) is a Mendelian recessive mutant.
