II.42. Further results of allelism testing of white streak mutants in barley.

In his previous article, the present author (Tsuchiya, 1972, BGN 2: 80-87) reported that the following six white streak mutant stocks were allelic to white streak (wst, CI 11767):

1. White streak    CI 11766
2. White streak 3 wst 3    Akashinriki
3. Caldecott's streak    T1-26
4. Grandpa fine stripe    CI 6856
5. Albino stripe    T12-26
6. Streak    CI 6758

The materials used in this study are as follows:

Because of partly maternal nature of inheritance of the white streak character (Takahashi, et al., 1969. Ber. Ohara Inst. landw. Biol. 15:35-46), F1 hybrids from crosses of normal green x white streak were used in some crosses. The data obtained from F1 analysis of 40 cross combinations gave the following conclusions:

1. The white streaked gene, rb of ribbongrass is not allelic to wst, va, va 3, as(alb), or Arnason's streak.

2. The gene va is not allelic to wst, va 3, rb, or the white streak gene in Moravian.

3. The gene va 3 is not allelic to wst, rb, or va.

4. The white streaked gene in Moravian is not allelic to wst, wst 2, wst 4, or va.

5. The gene as(alb) is not allelic to rb, Arnason's streak or the streak gene in Minn 139.

6. The gene in Arnason's streak is not allelic to rb, as(als), or that in Minn 139.

Critical analysis to study the allelic relationships among wst 2, va, and va 3 is now under way.
