Peculiarities of inheritance of the most important characters in breeding
spring barley for quality was studied in 1969-1971. Varieties, contrasting
in their grain protein content were used in crosses. Twenty hybrid combinations,
including direct and back crosses were used for 15 varieties.
It has been proved that in the intermediate type of inheritance of
protein content in grain for all combinations elite plants out of F1 and
F2 manifested considerable deviation from the average index. For example,
when the average protein content in combination Moscovsky 121 x Ganna Loosdorfskaya
was 12.69% the percentage of protein in grains of elite plants was 7.97
- 16.12, and in the combination Spartan II x Europeum 353/133 the protein
content was 11.80 and 8.74 - 14.83% correspondingly.
It has been also found that varying the character "protein content" increases from the first to the second generation. Coefficient of variation (V) in F1 was equal to 7.47 - 9.34% and in F2 - to 12.12 - 26.39% (1971). The inheritance degree (H2) of this index is relatively low in the second generation - H2 = 0.123 - 0.212.
It should be noted that the type of crossing (direct or back) has no effect on the character of inheritance and the degree of this index.
