pp. 1-3

I.1. Call for contributions to BGN, Volume 4.

Please read carefully the notice for "Call for contributions to Barley Genetics Newsletter----" on page 2, BGN, Vol. 1. The following points are particularly emphasized:
1. Put the name of your country clearly in the manuscripts and all other correspondence.
2. Send original manuscript, NOT a copy. You keep a copy.
3. Manuscript should be typed in double space, and prepared by following the format of BGN, Vol. 1 and 2.

I.2. Request for genetic stocks from the Stock Center at Colorado State University.

If anyone has genetic stock(s) which has already been assigned gene symbol(s), but the seeds have not yet been sent to the Stock Center in Fort Collins, please send the seeds and all available information, including two copies of reprints of published paper(s) on the mutant stock(s) to:

T. Tsuchiya Department of Agronomy Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado 80521 U.S.A.

For homozygous viable mutants about 30 seeds are adequate, while for the heterozygotes for lethal or sterility genes 50 seeds are required.

The following information together with the seeds should be given to the Stock Center.
1. Variety or stock name or other designation.
2. Year obtained, if known.
3. Spontaneous or induced mutation(s). If the latter case, the name of the mutagens, the condition of mutagen treatment, and other information.
4. Main characteristics -- original description or description by the sender of the seeds.
5. Picture and/or slide, if possible.
6. Other genotype than that for the main trait.
7. Any information on the inheritance of the mutant characters, particularly for those not formally published.
8. Date of allelism testing against similar type mutants, particularly the ones which have already been assigned a gene symbol and used as marker stocks.
9. The format used for gene description would be useful for the preparation of the report (see BGN 1:103-193).

I.3. International Symposium on HAPLOIDS IN HIGHER PLANTS --Advances and Potential, June 10-14, 1974.

The symposium will be held at University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada. The Symposium will cover and compare various methods of producing haploids in higher plants and their utilization in research and plant breeding. The program is expected to include invited papers on specific topics, workshops and perhaps a restricted number of short contributed papers. To ensure the proper coverage of various aspects of haploidy, an International Program Committee has been established and includes: S. S. Chase, G. Melchers, S. J. Peloquin, R. Riley, R. F. Stettler and N. Sunderland. The Symposium will coincide with Centennial Celebrations of the Ontario Agriculture College of the University of Guelph. To ensure receiving information on mailings, persons may drop a card with their address to:

K. J. Kasha, Organizing Chairman
Crop Science Department
University of Guelph,
Guelph, Ontario,
Canada

I.4. Supplemental guidelines for contributors of Barley Genetics Newsletter.

The following is additional information regarding contributions:
1. A limited number of black and white photographs will be accepted. The photographs should be of good quality to get good reproduction. The editorial committee reserves the right to make selection if it is necessary. The number of photos should be limited to a minimum. In order to save cost of reproduction and get better quality, all photos will be reduced to one-half (1/2) for reproduction in the newsletter. Therefore, please prepare your original picture twice the size of the one to be printed.
2. A new section will be established titled "List of Available Multiple Marker Stocks". The Genetic Stock Center in Fort Collins, Colorado has no intention of collecting and maintaining multiple marker stocks which are collections from various cross combinations in your experiments. However, some workers might be interested in using those stocks. Therefore, if you send the stock number (if any), genotype, and other information to the Editor, it will be compiled and published in BGN.
3. Reports on the activities from each research institution are of particular interest to many research workers. Information on your research program now underway and the plans for the near future will be highly appreciated. This information to be published in BGN will help prevent duplicating the conduct of similar or the same kind of experiments.
4. Letters to the Editors are welcome by all contributors. Please relate your experience, express your opinions, comments, or suggestions in the form of letters. They will be published in a section titled "Letters to the Editors".
5. Please give your complete mailing address including the name of country. The mailing list will be made based on this address.
6. All correspondence should be in English.
7. It would be of great assistance if, in addition to your research notes, coordinator's report or others, you would send us: Titles of barley publications by yourself or your colleagues which appeared in the years 1969 through 1972. Citations of papers in relatively inaccessible journals are especially desired.
8. Errors in the past issues (Volumes 1 and 2) are listed in Volume 3. Any errors not listed in Vol. 3 will be listed in future issues. Editors appreciate receiving information on errors or mistakes.

Send your contribution or request for a copy of the Barley Genetics Newsletter, Vol. 4, 1974, to

Dr. T. Tsuchiya
Department of Agronomy
Colorado State University
Fort Collins, Colorado, 80521 U.S.A.

I.5. BGN Back number is available.

Currently, BGN, Volume 1 is out of print. Therefore, we mailed only Volume 2 to some people who recently requested Vol. 1 and 2.

We have plans to reprint Vol. 1 sometime this year and send it to those people who received only Vol. 2.

When you request a copy of Barley Genetics Newsletter, please clearly describe the NAME OF YOUR COUNTRY in your letter. Also, YOUR NAME should be TYPED or PRINTED because we have experienced difficulties in reading your name and in figuring out your country from your stationary prepared for domestic use. Your cooperation is highly appreciated.
