1. Sequenced Genes
Nomenclature will follow the current rules of the International Society for Plant Molecular Biology (ISPMB) Commission on Plant Gene Nomenclature (CPGN).
For example:
Explanation:
Amy1 | 1 | ; | 1 | - | xxx | |
mnemonic of 3 to 5 letters to describe function - designations agreed by CPGN working groups | 1 space | number to describe homology groups | semi-colon | number for member of multigene family | hyphen | allele in standard format for species |
Action: Workers should register genes with the CPGN registry as described in the reference below. This should be done as soon as possible to minimize the number of changes that are required.

2. Other genes.
Revision of Descriptions and Designations: Jerry Franckowiak will publish revised BGN descriptions of genes, incorporating three-letter mnenomics as agreed previously but not implemented.
For example:
(all in italics)
Explanation:
Ant1 | . | 56 |
3-letter mnemonic. May be followed by a number or letter(s) -- depending on previous designations | period | unique allele or mutant -- based on previous usage |
Designation of New Genes: Jerry Franckowiak (jfranko@badlands.nodak.edu)
and Brian Steffenson (bsteffen@badlands.nodak.edu) will act as a clearing
house for new genes and alleles, with Brian focussing on resistance genes.
3. Approval of barley gene nomenclature rules.
Recommended rules for barley gene nomenclature and approved modifications of them have previously been published in Barley Genetics Newsletter (beginning in Volume 2), but these rules have never been formally adopted at a business meeting of the International Barley Genetics Symposium.
It was moved (R. Nilan) and seconded (K. Kasha) that the barley gene nomenclature rules and their modifications, including the nomenclature rules for 'sequenced genes in barley' and 'other barley genes' that were approved at the 7th IBGS meeting, be approved by the IBGS.
After this motion was passed, it was recommended that the gene nomenclature rules for barley be published frequently in the Barley Genetics Newsletter.
