NEW Instructions for Contributors to Barley Genetics Newsletter
Barley Genetics Newsletter is now published electronically as well as on paper!
To facilitate publishing both versions, we have revised the instructions for contributors.
The instructions that follow replace those printed in BGN Volume 24.
General instructions
For each paper to be included in BGN Volume 25, a 3.5" diskette and 2 printed copies of the
original manuscript should be sent to the Technical Editor:
Dr. Diane E. Mather, BGN Technical Editor, Department of Plant Science,
McGill University, 21111 Lakeshore, Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec H9X 3V9, CANADA
before January 31 1996.
Manuscripts should be written in English and be brief.
Each paper should be prepared separately, with the title and the authors' names
and addresses at the top of the first page.
The diskette
Put the text, each table and each figure in a separate file.
Name these files with:
- your initials
- a manuscript number
- "txt", "tab", or "fig"
- a number for each table or figure
- an appropriate file extension, depending on the file format
For example, the files for a manuscript from Diane Mather might be named:
- dm1txt.wpd
- dm1tab1.txt
- dm1tab2.txt
- dm1fig1.gif
Formats for text files
The text of all articles will be converted to HTML and may be submitted in that form if desired.
Other file types we can read:
- PC: WordPerfect 6.0, Microsoft Word 6.0, Microsoft Write 3.11, ASCII text
- Macintosh: Microsoft Word 5.1, Writenow 3.0, MacWrite 5.0, ASCII text
Preferred formats: HTML or WordPerfect.
Please avoid the use of special symbols.
Some of these (eg. Greek letters, most superscripts) can't be included in HTML documents,
and these will have to be converted to an ASCII representation.
Others (eg. Scandinavian characters) can be included, but can't be viewed by all WWW browsers.
Format for tables
Tables will be the most difficult items to incorporate into the electronic version.
Please keep them simple.
Preferred format: ASCII text
Align columns with spaces (not tabs).
Tables should be less than 80 characters wide, including the spaces.
Formats for figures
All figures will be converted to GIF format. Other acceptable formats:

Microsoft PowerPoint, WordPerfect 6.0

- printed copies
Preferred format: GIF
Figures submitted as bitmap image files should be no larger than 800 pixels wide X 600 pixels
high.
Figures submitted as object graphic image files or printed copy should be legible when reproduced
at 800 X 600 pixels or less. This should be possible if the smallest lower-case text character is
not smaller than 1.5% of the total height of the figure.
We can include colour figures in the electronic version, but only black and white in the hardcopy.
Send both if you like.
