Overall coordinator's report

Again this year, only a very few coordinators' reports have been received. The response has never been so poor. I once more want to stress that it is of great importance for the barley geneticists to obtain all current information from the coordinators. Many of the older barley workers are on the way to retire, and it is of great importance to transmit the knowledge we have collected during many decades to the younger generation. This is even more important as chromosome maps with molecular markers are increasing very rapidly, and it is of great importance to combine these maps with the map of the morphological markers. I call upon the coordinators of the seven chromosomes to make contact with the different laboratories over the world in order to find a suitable coorporation to combine the different maps. A list of the coordinators with their addresses and FAX numbers will also be published in this issue of BGN.

Some changes of the coordinators have taken place during 1993, but definite nominations cannot been done before the VIL International Barley Genetics Symposium in 1996. The coordinator for chromosome 2, Shaoke Wang, has left Fort Collins, and has resigned as coordinator. J. D. Franckowiak could think of taking over this coordination. There is no coordinator for 'Trisomics and aneuploid stocks after the death of Tak Tsuchiya. A. Hang in Aberdeen, Idaho could think of taking over the coordination of these stocks as he is well familiar with this field of research. He has provided a report for this issue of BGN. There also is no successor nominated for the Barley Genetic Stock Center at Fort Collins; this replacement is not settled. There are decisions made to move the Barley Genetic Stock Center from Fort Collins, Colorado to the USDA-ARS in Aberdeen, Idaho, USA. Seed requests can be sent to Harold E. Bockelman, USDA-ARS-NSGC-Aberdeen, Idaho, P.O.Box 307, Aberdeen, Idaho 83210, USA. FAX: + 1 208 397 4165, E-Mail: SGCHB@PRIME.ARS-GRIN.GOV.

During July 1993 I had the opportunity to participate the 15th North American Barley Research Workshop in Guelph, Canada. There have been many discussions and recommendations to establish an International Database for Barley Genes and Genetic Stocks. It is called upon the Nordic Gene Bank and the Nordic barley geneticists to develop such a database and realize this project. During the workshop in Guelph I learned about "Graingenes", the Triticeae Genome Database. There is a large request to incorporate the International Database for Barley Genes and Genetic Stocks into "Graingenes". Some preliminary inquiries have been made. This database is also constructed to include photographs of the different morphological characters, which will be started during 1994. In this connection it is absolutely necessary to strengthen the activities of the coordinators. I call upon all the coordinators to coorporate in getting all the different data and materials available for this database. I also ask the coordinators to collect their information on electronic media, which makes it much more easy to compile and to handle the database.
