The North American Barley Genome Mapping Project
This issue of the Barley Genetics Newsletter includes reports by members of the North American Barley Genome Mapping Project (NABGMP). What is this Project with the unpronounceable acronym? The NABGMP is as much a concept as an organization. It is the logical descendent of the illustrious history of innovative genetics and breeding research in barley. In 1988, the idea of applying molecular marker technology to crop improvement was daring and unfundable. The NABGMP was born over barley product and stimulated by fertile, and perhaps febrile, imaginations. What emerged were a set of underlying concepts: (i) medium density genome maps could be applied to public sector crop improvement, (ii) barley was an ideal model system, and (iii) the greatest gains would come from cooperation and open communication. Concepts were implemented, and with the generous support of barley growers, barley processors, and public sector agencies, the NABGMP has proceeded to systematically characterize U.S. and Canadian germplasm represented by the genotypes Steptoe, Morex, Harrington, and TR-306 - in terms of genetic markers and quantitative trait locus effects. The NABGMP is now moving into other germplasm, focussing on economically important traits, and developing new tools for genome analysis. The NABGMP is, therefore, a fluid entity. It is, and must remain, responsive to the interests and needs of North American barley scientists, producers, and consumers. The NABGMP has also forged strong international linkages, and these relationships will lead to mutually beneficial results.
The success of the NABGMP, which is indeed a "grand collaboration", is largely due to the energy, enthusiasm, and everlasting good humor of Dr. Bob Nilan, Coordinator of the NABGMP from 1989 - 1994. We thank Dr. Nilan for his untiring efforts, past and present participants for their contributions, and we look forward to constantly evolving partnerships.
