Allelism tests were completed for the male sterile gene msg,,jw (Table 1), which was shown by Franckowiak (1991) to be linked closely to the R locus in chromosome 7. The gene msg,,jw was first identified as a spontaneous mutant in a six-rowed line ND7369 by Franckowiak (Hockett, 1988). Male sterile plants had shrunken anthers, no filament elongation, and no selfed seed set (Hockett, 1988). The locus symbol msg49 and the allele symbol msg49jw are suggested for the msg,,jw gene. The backcross derived stock for msg49jw in 'Bowman' retains the R allele from ND7369.

When the allelism tests for the male sterile gene msg,,gh were nearly complete, msg,,gh and msg,,hm were shown to be alleles (Table 1). Thus, the combined data for msg,,gh and msg,,hm are presented to demonstrate that these genes are not alleles at a male sterile genetic locus previously assigned a gene symbol. A lower number of plants was scored in crosses to msg41ac, msg41dk and msg43br because their Bowman backcross-derived lines show partial female sterility. The locus symbol msg50 and allele symbols msg5Ogh and msg50hm are recommended for msg,,gh and msg,,hm, respectively.

Hockett (1984) reported that msg,,gh and msg,,hm were spontaneous mutants in Maris Mink and Berac, respectively, in stocks received from C. A. Foster. Hockett (1984) reported that both mutants are simply inherited genes, which were associated with normal anther size and filament elongation and set no selfed seed. A few selfed seed were observed as the Bowman backcross derived lines were being developed. Franckowiak (1991) demonstrated that both genes are linked to the Lk2 locus in chromosome 1.
