1. The chairman reported about the business meeting of the International Committee on Genetic Stocks, Nomenclature and Symbolization, where appropriate in the workshop discussion. One of the members, F. Scholz, requested to be replaced in the Committee. The Committee agreed to recommend to the International Organizing Committee that G. Künzel be a new member of the Committee. Otherwise all the committee members were present: U. Lundqvist (Chairman), W. Friedt (Secretary), G. Fedak, J. D. Franckowiak, J. Jensen, T. Konishi and G. Künzel. The following topics were discussed during the workshop:
2. The Coordinator system. There is agreement that the Coordinator system should continue. The following is a list of the Chromosome Linkage Groups and Genetic Stock Collections and the names of the individuals who have agreed to be coordinators for those groups and collections.

3. Barley Genetics Newsletter. As a new editorial committee J. Franckowiak, D. Falk and M. Davis (managing) were approved. Editorial instructions were discussed and rapid publication was requested. Deadline for submissions will be January 31st, annually.
4. Genetic stocks. Maintenance of genetic stocks and multiple marker stocks should be handled by regional barley germplasm collections.
5. Renumbering of the barley chromosomes. Numbering of barley chromosomes will be unchanged for the time being. Authors may include homoeologous nomenclature based on the Triticeae system. Other revisions were discussed.
6. RFLP maps. Combining the traditional gene maps with RFLP maps was encouraged.
7. Nomenclature and gene symbolization. Aspects of nomenclature and gene symbolization were considered.
   1. With regard to the nomenclature of Est loci, KONISHI and BROWN promised to tackle the problem, and will report to the coordinator (KLEINHOFS) for publication in Barley Genetics Newsletter.
   2. Regarding the usage of the "double comma system" for designation of alleles, it was suggested not to use the double comma (e.g. r,,e). Instead, an alternative way considered would be, e.g., wst-B or wst;B. Since a final decision was not made, the system suggested in Barley Genetics Newsletter Vol. 2 will be used until another system is recommended. Following much discussion, no changes of the existing rules were approved.
8. Barley genetic stocks. A listing of representative barley genetic stocks containing each gene was requested. An international list of data for barley samples available all over the world will be collected by J. Franckowiak and P. von Wettstein-Knowles (similar to those provided by the IBPGR for other species).
9. Finally, it was recommended that this workshop should not occur simultaneously with other meetings in future Barley Genetics Symposia.
