Inheritance:
Monofactorial. Commonly recessive in the F1, although some F1's tend to be intermediate in height to the parents (1).
Description:
Depending partially on environment, genotypes with sdwla range from 10 to 30 cm shorter than normal barley (1,2). Spike length is variable but fully as long as in normal height barley. The stock used for description of the mutant, M21, has the short straw and long spike of the original 'Jotun Mutant' as well as a large culm diameter from another of its parents, 'Vantage' (1,2). The pedigree of the basic stock, M21, is Jotun Mutant/'Kindred'//Vantage.
Origin of mutant:
Induced by radiation in Norwegian cultivar 'Jotun'
Mutational events:
Reduced height (sdwla) in 'Jotun' (2).
Mutant used for description and seed stock:
sdwla in Minn. M21, CI 15481 (2).
