II. 25. The amphiploid between Hordeum californicum and Triticum aestivum.
George Fedak, Ottawa Research Station, Agriculture Canada, Ottawa R1A OC6 Canada "R"
An intergeneric hybrid was obtained by crossing Triticum aestivum cv. Chinese Spring onto Hordeum californicum (2n = 2x = 14) (Gupta and Fedak, 1985). The mean chromosome configuration at MI of meiosis in F1 hybrid (2n = 28) was 0.7II + 27.30I indicating no obvious homology between parental genomes. The F1 hybrid resembled the paternal parent and were completely sterile. Partially fertile amphiploids were obtained, however, from colchicine treatment of the hybrid. The amphiploids had the expected chromosome number of 56. Preliminary results show a high frequency of unpaired chromosomes at MI in the amphiploid but all selfed progeny examined thus far have had a chromosome number of 56.
