FOREWORD
Due to a change in policy of the European countries, Barley Genetics Newletter will no longer be sent without charge to scientists in Europe. There will be a charge of five dollars ($5.00) in U.S. funds for each issue. This charge can be paid in advance or can be sent upon receipt of the BGN. We hope that five dollars will be adequate to pay for processing, printing and shipping costs but that may change at any time.

The list of barley gene symbols developed by Sogaard et al and the list of barley genetic stocks at the Barley Genetic Stock Center at Ft. Collins, Colorado, USA are not included in this issue because of cost limitations. They will be published again in the next volume of BGN.

I.1. Thirteenth American Barley Researchers Workshop

The 13th conference will be held at Bozeman, Montana at Montana State University in the last week of July, 1987. The program will be arranged at a future time and will include oral and poster presentations. We are in the heart of vacationland USA, so plan now to attend.

I.2. Notice of change in policy on publication costs.

For the past fourteen volumes of Barley Genetics Newsletter, one-half of the cost of publication has been paid by the European countries principally Denmark, Sweden and the Federal Republic of Germany. These countries are no longer planning to bear this cost. Therefore, with this volume (No. 15) there will be a charge of five dollars ($5.00) in U.S. funds made to each individual or laboratory receiving the BGN including all European countries. There are some exceptions, however, which have special arrangements for exchange of BGN with their publication(s). Payment may be made in advance or will be billed at the time of shipment of the newsletter. However, special arrangement was made for payment for Vol. 15 and 16. Please note I.4. for this special arrangement.

This sudden change by European contribution made it difficult to publish BGN Volume 15 on time, resulting in the delay of publication.

If an issue of BGN is not paid for, no future newsletters will be sent to the individual or laboratory.

I.3. Call for contribution of manuscripts for Barley Newsletter, Vol. 16, 1986

Barley Genetics Newsletter will be published in the spring of 1986. Manuscripts will be accepted until March 20, 1986.
The contents to be included, rules for contributions, and supplemental guidelines for contributions to Barley Genetics Newsletter, VOL. 15, P. are published in Barley Genetics Newsletter, VOL. 12, p. 1-3 and some previous issues of BGN.

Here are some more additional instructions for contributions regarding the preparation of the manuscript.

1. Manuscript should be prepared in a similar way as an ordinary journal. It is very important to proof-read before submitting the manuscript. Numbers in tables should be carefully checked for their accuracy.

2. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR NON-AMERICANS who use legal-size paper that he/she types manuscript in the area of 16 cm (wide) x 22 cm (long).

3. If a table is extra large, it should be photocopied or copied with reduction to meet the letter size area (16 em x 22 em). The editorial office does not want to retype a complicated large table to avoid making unnecessary mistakes. Prepare tables, especially a large size or complicated one, ready for reproduction. Do not put vertical lines in the table.

4. Figures also should be prepared ready for reproduction in a similar way to the tables. If the figure(s) including figure caption is larger than 16 cm x 22 cm, it should be photocopied or copied with the reduction to the size of a regular page (16 cm x 22 cm). Quality of the figure should be excellent to have a good reproduction.

5. Editors usually spend a considerable amount of time, energy and money to make tables and figures suitable for publication. This is one of the reasons for delay of publication of BGN.

6. Do not send a copy of figure with poor quality. You should send the original or copy of excellent quality. It is desirable to have photocopy of line drawings or regular copy with excellent quality.

7. Do not send "color" photos. Only black and white prints copy properly. If you send a color picture or slide, the editors have to do extra work. Please remember, editors are doing this job as a "service". We need your cooperation and help.

1.4. Notes on Payment

Because of a change in the financial management for publication and distribution, the payment for BARLEY GENETICS NEWSLETTTER has to be changed accordingly.

In the past we asked subscribers to pay for the publication after we mailed it. However, at least for BGN Vol. 16, we would like you to pay in advance if you want to receive Vol. 16.

Please send U.S. $10.00 (Ten dollars only) for BGN Vol. 15 and 16. If you have already paid in advance for both or either one of the issues, please disregard this or pay the difference. We thank you for your cooperation.
