II. 1. Location of a hordein G locus, Hrd G, on chromosome 5 of barley.

The hordein synthesis in barley is known to be controlled by loci Hrd A (=Hor 1), Hrd B (=Hor 2), Hrd C, Hrd D, Hrd E, Hrd F (Sozinov et al., 1978; Netsvetaev and Sozinov, 1982; Pomortsev et al., 1983) located on the short arm of chromosome 5 (Netsvetaev, 1978; Jensen et al., 1980; Shewry et al., 1980; Netsvetaev and Sozinov, 1982).

A new hordein-coding locus, Hrd G, has been identified using self-pollinating oldest barley populations. It controls the presence of two polypeptides in the hordein B region (starch gel, pH 3.1). These polypeptides are characteristic of the variety Elgina. Recombination (p) was calculated by

Populations P12 and P47 from crosses Nutans 244 x Elgina and Union x Elgina, respectively, were analysed. Characteristics of parental varieties for hordein loci are given in Table 1. Differences for F hordein are observed between Union and Elgina only. However, P47 was not classified for Hrd F. The linkage of Hrd A with Hrd G was also estimated using the Odesskiy 100 variety. With respect to Hrd A and Hrd G, it is an inbred population from the cross L-774/74 x Hadmersleben 36462/64. According to its pedigree, L-774/74 had alleles Hrd A2, HrdB8, Hrd F1, hrd G. The other parents obviously had Hrd A1, Hrd B8, Hrd F1, Hrd G.

Table 1. Characteristics of varieties for Hrd loci used as parent in the crosses or inbreeding population.

Table 2 shows that hordein G is controlled by a locus which is more tightly linked with Hrd A when compared with Hrd B. It is characteristic that by its physical and chemical properties (electrophoretic mobility, disulfide bonds) hordein G is closer to hordein B.

Table 2. Fapproaching infinity  segregation data and linkage estimation involving Hrd G, Hrd A and Hrd B loci on chromosome 5S.
