The nomenclature and symbolization for some mutant types for zoned leaf or zebra striped leaves have been confused for many years. The same gene symbol zbc has been used in most of these stocks (Tsuchiya, 1975). At least two genetically different types of zoned leaf were identified as follows (Tsuchiya and Baldivia, 1981):
Zoned leaf in CSU stock B8-9, simple recessive
Zoned leaf in Utah T41, incompletely dominant.
Based on the fact that these two stocks are genetically different, the following symbols are proposed for each of these stocks:
zbc zoned leaf or zebra striped leaf in the stock CSU B8-9
zbc2 zoned leaf or zebra striped leaf in the stock Utah
T41.
It is also confirmed that Utah T41 carries the same gene zbc2 as that of University of Alberta Accession 43 which was apparently provided by Utah State University (Kasha and Walker, 1960).
