II. 31. Hybrids between Hordeum pubiflorum and Triticum aestivum.

George Fedak, Ottawa Research Station, Agriculture Canada, Ottawa, K1A OC6 Canada. "R"

Employing the techniques of post-pollination applications of GA3 and embryo rescue, intergeneric hybrids between Hordeum pubiflorum and Triticum aestivum cv. Chinese Spring were quite readily obtained. From a total of 266 pollinated florets, 13 seeds were obtained which yielded 10 tiny embryos of which 2 grew to produce seedlings, i.e. a success rate of 0.75% considering seedlings as proportion of pollinated florets.

Hybrid plants had the expected chromosome number of 28 and were vegetatively very vigorous so that single plants were "cloned" to produce up to 12 sections. As observed in other Hordeum-Triticum hybrids, the plants were wheat-like in morphology with no obvious Hordeum characteristics.
