The shrunken endosperm, high lysine mutants sex1a, Risø 29, and Risø 86 have been reported allelic by Ullrich and Eslick (1978a). The mutant sex1a had previously been localized to chromosome 6 by translocation linkage analysis (Jarvi and Eslick, 1975). Ullrich and Eslick (1978b) reported that a fourth shrunken endosperm, high lysine mutant, Risø 13, is also located on chromosome 6, but it is non-allelic to the other three allelic mutants located on this chromosome (1978a).
A more recent study by Jensen (1979) has reported that Risø 13 is allelic to sex1a, Risø 29, and Risø 86. A fifth mutant of this type, Risø 527, was also reported as being located on chromosome 6, but nonallelic to these other four allelic mutants. Jensen and Doll (1979) have suggested that Risø 13 and Risø 527 might have been switched in the allele tests performed by Ullrich and Eslick (1978a).
A check of the seed stocks at Montana State University's Barley Program indicates that Risø 13, 29, and 86 were received from Denmark in 1974. However, the mutant Risø 527 was never received and, thus, never grown here.
An allele test of all Risø 13 stocks used at Montana State University was performed in the greenhouse at Bozeman during the winter of 1979-1980. At the same time, the original allele test of Risø 13 was repeated using the original Risø 13 stock received from Denmark. All Fl's were grown in the field at Bozeman during the summer of 1980.
The first allele test indicates that the stock of Risø 13 which was used in the allele test by Ullrich and Eslick (1978a) is non-allelic to the original stock of Risø 13 received from Denmark, and non-allelic to the stock used in the chromosome location tests (Ullrich and Eslick, 1978b).
The second allele test confirms the report by Jensen (1979) that Risø 13 is allelic to sex1a, Risø 29, and Risø 86.
The stock of Risø 13 which was used in the original allele test (Ullrich and Eslick, 1978a) was a Risø 13, msg 5 stock developed here at Montana State University (Ullrich and Eslick, 1977). It is likely that only a single row of this stock was switched with another shrunken endosperm mutant (possibly Risø 56). Thus, the entire stock will be allele tested and a Risø 13, msg 5 will be made available as soon as possible.
