II.41 Tetraploid winter barley.

R. N. H. Whitehouse, Plant Breeding Institute, Cambridge, England.

Colchicine was used to treat seedlings of the two-row cultivar Stadlers Winter Barley.

Seeds on the resulting plants were checked for chromosome number and those with 2n = 28 were selected. The tetraploid form differs from the diploid in being shorter, later maturing, more susceptible to Erysiphe graminis and in having broader leaves and partial sterility.

Small amounts of seed should be available for distribution after harvest 1971.
