II.35 Occurrence of a plant with 2n = 13 + 2 telocentric chromosomes in barley.
T. Tsuchiya, Agronomy Department, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado 80521, U.S.A.
In the progeny of the cross between diploid and telotrisomic for chromosome
1S, a plant was found which had the somatic chromosome number of 2n = 13
+ 2 telocentric chromosomes. All metaphase cells in root tip mitosis showed
the same chromosome complement, 13 + 2 telos. The ditelosomic nature was
confirmed at mitotic prophase in root tips; the one telocentric was slightly
longer than the other. The mitotic chromosome behavior was normal with
normal separation at anaphase. The plant morphology was similar to the
normal diploid sibling with seed fertility of 76.0 percent. Therefore,
it was assumed that the two telocentric chromosomes should be Telo 1L and
Telo 1S. It is expected that a plant with 2n = 16 = 12 + 4 (2 pairs) telos
might be found in the progeny of this abnormal plant.
