II.19 Allelism within a series of glossy sheath mutants.

A collection of 24 glossy sheath mutants was examined for allelism with
the results reported in Table 1. Six loci were represented in the collection.
A proposed system of symbolization is applied to the collection. The
authors believe that readily identifiable phenotypes in a dihybrid cross
such as 1) glossy plant (spike, stem, sheath, and leaves), 2) glossy spike
(spike only), 3) glossy leaf (leaf only), and 4) glossy sheath (a glossy
sheath and all types not included in 1, 2, or 3 above) should be designated
by separate letter symbolization. Thus the gs symbol is assigned
to the mutant types reported here.
Table 1. F1 Phenotypic classification of crosses glossy sheath (gsgs) x glossy sheath (gsgs).
To avoid bothersome subscripts or superscripts if letters are used it is proposed that the locus be designated by arabic numbers, in this instance 1 thru 6 for the 6 loci identified.
Since presumably 24 separate mutational events gave rise to the 24 mutants examined, the events are lettered in sequence which avoids using subscripts and superscripts and/or dashes or spacings. The events have been assigned the letters a thru x and arbitrarily assigned to the 24 mutant types.
Previous gene designations from the literature and suggested symbols are given in Table 2.

It should be noted that gs8 was found to be allelic to gs5 and gs7 allelic to gs6 and that gs4 was not allelic to gs3 as reported by Rasmusson and Lambert.
Seed of the 24 mutants has been supplied for inclusion in the Central Barley Genetics Stocks collection at Fort Collins, Colorado.
