An original paper by S. F. Arkhangelskij, V. P. Konovalov, P. P. Kovalichuk and O. K. Sljusarenko "Effect of largeness and uniformity of barley seeds on sowing qualities and productive properties" has been published in the magazine "Selekcija i Semenovodstvo" 1970, w3.
The seeds of the six-rowed barley variety "Odes-Skij 17" were divided into three fractions: small seeds - 1000 grain weight amounted to 27.6 g, medium ones - 38.9 g, and large seeds - 50.1 g. Laboratory studies showed the energy of emergence and the germinability of seeds of the three above fractions to have small differences. However, the number of primary embryonal radicles was found to be vividly different in extreme seed fractions. The small and large fractions are compared in Table 1.
At the same time, it would be interesting to study the quality of barley seeds from different locations on the ear. With that end in view the ear of barley was divided into three sections: 1) the base of the ear - the section comprising 3 lower units of rachis, 2) the apex of the ear - 3 most upper units of rachis, and 3) the middle of the ear - all the other units of rachis. One hundred ears of the same size were under test. The results are given in Table 2.
