Release of the new cultivar Pehlivan in the Thrace region of Turkey.
Metin Babaoglu.
The new breadwheat cultivar Pehlivan has been released in Turkey. This cultivar was from the crossing program at the Thrace Agricultural Research Institute in Edirne province in 1993. The line with the code number TE 2376-6130 was bulked in the F5. After being tested for nearly 8 years in preliminary yield trials, 2 years of yield trials, and regional yield and state registration trials, the line was released and registered under the name of Pehlivan. Pehlivan is the Turkish word for wrestler. The cultivar is one of the best in terms of grain yield ever grown in the Thrace region. The development of Pehlivan from crossing to registration took nearly 15 years. We hope that Pehlivan will be more popular especially in the Thrace region in a few years. The parents and pedigree of Pelivan are as follows: 'BEZ / TVR /5/ CFN / BEZ // SU92 / CI 13645 /3/ NAI 60 /4/ EMU S' TE2376-6T-3T-1T-0T (TE = ThraceEdirne, T = Thrace).
Pehlivan was released in 1993 but not registered until 1997. A winter bread wheat cultivar, Pehlivan is 90-95 cm tall and awnless, with yellow glumes. Hard, red, plump grain has a 1,000-kernel weight of 40-42 g and a test weight between 78-80 kg. Pehlivan is winter hardy, with a high-tillering capacity, high-yield potential, and good bread-making quality. Pehlivan is resistant to cold and lodging and tolerant to drought, but susceptible to P. striiformis and T. caries. Seed treatment against common bunt is required before seeding. The seeding rate for Pehlivan is 500 grains/m2 with a 12-15 kg of nitrogen/m2, but a lower seeding rate of 350-400 grains/m2 also may be utilized because of Pehlivan's high tillering capacity. Pehlivan is suitable for flat or nearly flat areas.
