The effect of artificial infectin on the components of grain yeild in wheat with a natural infection of Fusarium head blight.

Evaluation of wheat for resistance to FHB under artificial infection showed a reduction in the number of kernels/spike, kernel weight/spike, and 1,000-kernel weight. The greatest effect of FHB infection was on the number of kernels/spike, and the least effect was on the 1,000-kernel weight. We conclude that the number of kernels/spike may be a good indicator of resistance in a particular genotype to FHB.

Results of an analysis of variance for various yield components under artificial and natural infection are shown in Table 1. We observed a significant difference among the genotypes for kernel number/spike in trial 1 with both artificial and natural infections. However, these results were not obtained in the second trial. The reduction in 1,000-kernel weight was significant only under natural infection and only in trial 1.

Table 1. Results of the analysis of variance for different yield components in two separate trial under artificial and natural infections with Fusarium graminearum.

    Component F-test significance *
 Artificial infection  Natural infection
  trial 1   trial 2   trial 1   trial 2
Kernel number/spike  ++  ++  ++  ---
 Kernel weight/spike (g)  ++  ---  ++  ---
 1,000-kernel weight (g)  ---  ---  ++  ---
 * ++ significant at p = 1 %; - not signigicant at p = 1 %
