Meeting and book announcement: Current topics in plant cytogenetics related to plant improvement.

On 21-22 February, 1997, there was a successful meeting on 'Current Topics in Plant Cytogenetics Related to Plant Improvement' in Tulln (close to Vienna), Austria. The intention of the symposium was to bring together scientists of this field from eastern and western European countries, which had been separated for so long by ideological barriers. Scientists from more than 17 countries, including two from the U.S., discussed the latest developments and achievements in cytogenetic research.

Invited contributions were presented by Bernd Friebe, Joerg Fuchs, Carla Ceoloni, Jaroslav Dolezel, Nicolas Jouve, Adam Lukaszewski, Rolf Schlegel, and Jaap Sybenga. A proceedings containing the presentations at the symposium is being published.

Contributions were peer-reviewed and grouped under the following headings:

• Reviews (8);
• Chromosome analysis (6);
• Mitotic and meiotic studies (6);
• Gene introgression, Gene localization, mapping, and isolation (8);
• Genome size variation (3);
• Haploid induction and chromosome doubling (3);
• Wheat-rye translocations (4); and
• Triticale (3).

A summary of the symposium was prepared by Colin Law. Guedes-Pinto provided a summary of the work and valuable contributions of T. Mello-Sampayo who passed away on 20 January, 1997.
