1996-97 season.
The unusual weather events of the season provided record yield levels for much of the central plains, and at the same time, provided very good selection differentials for wheat soilborne mosaic/spindle streak mosaic and leaf rust infections. Test weight differentials were difficult to obtain. With the exception of the Texas panhandle, our western locations experienced drier than normal conditions and exposure to RWA, resulting in fewer materials being advanced.
Varietal releases.
Cossack (G1594) is a HRWW derived from a segregating population of eastern European germplasm. Cossack is a tall semidwarf with full season maturity, and it well adapted to growing regions of the southern Great Plains, with good winter hardiness; resistance to WSBMV and Hessian fly (Great Plains biotype), and moderate susceptibility to leaf rust. Test weights have been good.
Enhancer (G12017) is a HRWW derived from surviving single plant selections made in a severely winter damaged nursery in Hastings, Nebraska. Enhancer is a medium-height, medium-maturity cultivar that has shown good adaptation to most areas of the southern Great Plains. Enhancer is resistant to WSBMV, tolerance to tan spot, and moderate susceptibility to leaf rust.
