The last up-date to the list of abbreviations was published in volume 43 of the Annual Wheat Newsletter. This listing includes abbreviations assigned since that date. We would appreciate receiving any information concerning new cultivars; including name, pedigree, abbreviation, selection history, growth habit, origin, and year of release. Additions or corrections to the present list also would be appreciated.
A complete listing of wheat cultivar abbreviations is available from the CIMMYT Wheat Program on diskette in the following formats: Excel, Lotus, and ASCII. The 1997 editions of the publication "Semidwarf Bread Wheats: Names, Pedigrees, Selection history and origin" and "Wheat Varieties of South America" are now available from CIMMYT.
CIMMYT additionally is distributing two data management packages that bring pedigree information and cultivar names and abbreviations together: the Genetic Resource Information Package (GRIP I) for wheat (Mackay et al. 1996) and the International Wheat Information System (IWIS) (Fox et al. 1996).
Grip I collates cultivar names, abbreviations, and pedigree information for more than 100,000 wheats; GRIP II on CD-ROM will be available in December 1998. The IWIS is a system that manages and integrates information pertaining to bread wheat, durum wheat, and triticale. These information tools are published on diskette and CD-ROM. Readers interested in obtaining them should contact the CIMMYT Wheat Program. IWIS data also are available on the internet at http://probe.Nalusda.gov.8300/cgi-bin/browse/cimmyt.
